GMS Parents, Guardians, & Students:
Next week our 6th grade students will be participating in “A Day of Science” which will allow them to experience the same type of classes they have been exposed to at Nature’s Classroom. Students were presented with the classes being offered and were asked to identify those classes in which they were the most interested. A slideshow of class offerings can be found here: Day of Science.
Grade 7 students will be having “A Day of Fun” on June 15th where they will be playing games, listening to music, watching a movie and having an outdoor BBQ prepared by our GMS cafeteria staff. Please look for more information to come home regarding this event.

One School, One Book 2021
Gardner Middle School has chosen our book for this year’s Summer reading. A Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt has been selected and purchased for all incoming 5th, 6th and 7th grade students. Books and additional information will be shared with students next week.
Ally has been smart enough to fool a lot of smart people. Every time she lands in a new school, she is able to hide her inability to read by creating clever yet disruptive distractions. She is afraid to ask for help; after all, how can you cure dumb? However, her newest teacher Mr. Daniels sees the bright, creative kid underneath the trouble maker. With his help, Ally learns not to be so hard on herself and that dyslexia is nothing to be ashamed of. As her confidence grows, Ally feels free to be herself and the world starts opening up with possibilities. She discovers that there’s a lot more to her—and to everyone—than a label, and that great minds don’t always think alike.
June is LGBTQ+ Pride Month. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender, Queer/Questioning, and more (LGBTQ+) is celebrated annually in June to honor the 1969 Stonewall riots, and works to achieve equal justice and equal opportunity for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) Americans. In June of 1969, patrons and supporters of the Stonewall Inn in New York City staged an uprising to resist the police harassment and persecution to which LGBT Americans were commonly subjected. This uprising marks the beginning of a movement to outlaw discriminatory laws and practices against LGBT Americans. Federal and local policies and practices are increasingly acknowledging and focusing on LGBTQ youth and numerous national advocacy and other organizations are also giving greater attention to LGBTQ youth in their work. Encouraging greater acceptance and support for all youth, including those who are or are perceived to be LGBTQ, will make communities, schools, and other settings safer, better places for all youth. (Youth.gov 2021).
At GMS a display of our Pride was made by Liza Tierney, school counselor, and two 7th graders, K. Mackie and B. Hudson (not pictured). This display shows vocabulary being used within and for this community, as well as literature that dives deep into the discussion of Pride or may have a character or two that show representation of this community.
